The Computer Science Department is announcing AI for Good: Ethics and ImpactEvaluation of Interactive Systems, two new courses that will be offered in the Spring 2021 term under CS 1699 – Special Topics in Computer Science. Both are considered upper-level CS electives courses:

CS1699 – AI for Good: Ethics and Impact

  • Instructor: Dr. Malihe Alikhani
  • Description: Artificial intelligence (AI) holds tremendous promise to benefit nearly all aspects of society, including healthcare, food production, economy, education, security, the law, and even our personal activities.  The development of AI is creating new opportunities to improve the lives of people around the world. This class aims to cultivate interdisciplinary learning. Students will be equipped with the technical and intellectual tools, ethical foundation, and psychological framework to successfully navigate the responsible AI practices. We will discuss various issues and concerns surrounding AI, such as ethics, fairness, and interpretability. Students are required to demonstrate AI for good in action with a mini-project and write a critique on current codes of ethics for the machine learning community.
  • Course Prerequisite: CS1501 or permission from the instructor
  • Offered: Tue/Thu 9:25 a.m. – 10:40 a.m.

CS 1699 – Evaluation of Interactive Systems

  • Instructor: Dr. Erin Walker
  • Description: This course will cover user-facing methods for evaluating interactive systems. It spans the design of user study protocols, appropriate study measures, and the quantitative and qualitative analysis of study data. Both techniques appropriate for prototypes (e.g., thinkalouds) and deployed systems (e.g., A/B testing) will be discussed. In addition, emerging topics in evaluation will be addressed such as the use of eye tracking and physiological measures, and the use of automated analysis techniques for log data.
  • Course Prerequisite: CS 1501
  • Offered: Mon/Wed 3:25 p.m. – 4:40 p.m.
