Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh, one of the first such departments in the United States. We hope that you enjoy your stay with us today.

Our department is one of three departments and programs belonging to Pitt’s School of Computing and Information. Our Oakland campus is home to over 26,000 students.

The University of Pittsburgh is located in the Oakland cultural section of the city of Pittsburgh. Pitt is ranked 13th among all public, and 59th among all universities in the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education rankings. Symbolic of the University is the 42-story Gothic structure called the Cathedral of Learning, which is the second tallest academic structure in the world and features unique nationality rooms which pay tribute to the heritage of Western Pennsylvania.

The University of Pittsburgh hosts one of the oldest CS Departments in the world with research and teaching excellence since 1966. The CS Department covers many areas of research/teaching: AI, algorithms, databases, software engineering, systems and networks, data visualization/imaging, security/privacy, embedded systems, and natural language processing. Substantial research funding is provided by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and other federal agencies.

The CS Department is ranked 25th out of 473 ranked programs (19th with respect to gender diversity) in the most recent PhDs.org evaluation, and 34th out of 128 in the most recent (2011) National Research Council (NRC) evaluation, jumping up 9 positions since the 1995 NRC rankings. Reuters ranked Pitt 39th on its list of the world’s 100 most innovative universities in 2016, based on research, output, and patent filings.
